Premiere

Burden of Choice premiered at Salisbury’s Meroney Theater on Oct. 27, 2005. More than 200 people attended, including public officials, school personnel, cast members and the production team.

The audience, some wiping away tears, gathered for a reception following the screening. The powerful film obviously hit home for many.

Two days later, the Salisbury Post ran a letter to the editor from Dr. Ron Turbyfill, principal of South Rowan High School.

In the letter, he wrote:

“As principal of South Rowan High School, I am determined to have our students see this important drama. I know it will have an impact on our students, for they will see their peers and friends as actors on the screen. But sadly, many will know firsthand the impact of tragedy and loss as they recall other friends and peers who were involved in real-life accidents. It will be difficult for them to see, as it was for me.

I encourage local schools, churches, and community groups to view and share "Burden of Choice" with teens in Rowan County. If but one life can be spared the agony of a careless or reckless decision, the purpose of creating ‘Burden of Choice’ will be rewarded.”

And days before the screening, the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education embraced the film, voting unanimously to present it to every high school and middle school student during the 2006-2007 school year.

Using Burden

Local church groups are presenting the film to both parents and teens. After watching Burden of Choice focus groups are assembled and discussions follow about the content of the film and how choices affect us all.

Local law enforcement officers have committed to using the video as a teaching tool for teenage drivers.

About 150 copies of Burden of Choice have been distributed nationwide. School leaders, law enforcement and emergency personnel have requested copies.
